Mt. Helix Academy’s provides as much additional support as our students need to be academically and socially successful. Some students need extra help in reading or spelling; others require special instruction in all basic skills. Check the list of options to the left to appreciate the range of assistance our Learning Resources program can provide.
We also provide a solution for the occasional student with behavior problems
Some students are able to progress academically at the rate expected of Mt. Helix Academy students but, because they display significant problem behaviors, they cannot be served at the school. Such students have been educated very successfully by enrolling in the Foundations Program of TIEE’s COOK Education Center for the time necessary to replace problem behaviors with socially appropriate behaviors. Once the student consistently displays behavior during instruction and other school activities that is expected of Mt. Helix Academy students, a program of transition can be implemented. Because both schools are TIEE schools, operate according to the same behavioral science principles, and use the same methods and materials, the transition can be as seamless as possible.
• Some kids need more structure
• Some students need academic assistance
• Some require more intensive instruction
In keeping with Mt. Helix Academy’s commitment to maximize the academic success of every student, we offer the full range of options for academic assistance.
Primary/Elementary Study Hall
A supervised study hall is available to students in the Primary and Elementary modules from 3:15 to 4:00 PM each day. Students are provided a quiet, distraction-free environment in which to complete their homework assignments. Those who need a bit of help find that it is readily available from the study hall monitor. Many parents find the Primary/Elementary Study Hall an invaluable resource, which supports their busy home schedules and reduces the stress sometimes associated with homework completion.
Jr. High Study Hall
A supervised, one-hour study hall, from 3:30 p.m. to 4: 30 PM is available to students in Mt. Helix Academy’s Jr. High module. The Jr. High Study Hall is directly supervised by a Jr. High teacher who provides the assistance each student needs to complete assignments.
Homework Club • a more intensive option for success
Mt. Helix Academy’s Homework Club is for students who need more supervision and assistance than is available in the after school Study Halls or that can be available at home. Each Homework Club teacher has no more than five students. As a result, each student is provided with the personalized assistance needed to get organized, get started, continue uninterrupted, actually obtain assistance with the assignment, and better comprehend the subject matter.
Homework Club is available Monday – Thursday, from 3:15 – 4:15 PM but not during holidays or special school events. Homework Club fee is $25 per session and must be purchased for a minimum of two weeks or eight sessions ($200). If Homework Club is purchased for a minimum of six weeks or 24 sessions, the price is $20 per session ($480). In either case, payment must be made in advance to Mt. Helix Academy.

After Homework Club
Students may be picked up after Homework Club ends. Students not picked up by 4:25 PM, will be sent to the Activity Center for after school child care and must be picked up from the school’s Activity Center.
Absence from Homework Club
In the event that a student must be absent from Homework Club for other than illness or injury which keeps the student from attending school, twenty-four hours notice must be given or the fee will be charged for the session.
Homework Club achievement reporting
Parents can expect periodic reports of their child’s progress in homework club. It is the school’s goal to prepare all students so that Homework Club is not required for success.
Mt. Helix Academy’s AIM HIGH Resource Center provides a program for students who need additional assistance with just one or two subjects as well as a full day program for students who require intensive instruction to catch up with their age mates.
Program for basic skills instruction
AIM HIGH Resource Center provides a program for students who require more intensive instruction in just one or two basic skills than they can be given in their general education classes. As much as possible, the necessary classes are scheduled at the same time as those subjects are being taught in the general education program. This scheduling allows participating students to join their peers in their other, more successful classes.
Full-day program for students with many needs
AIM HIGH Resource Center’s full-day program is an academic and school skills program designed for good kids who are significantly behind in academics, who may be less than well organized, and who have difficulty with self-management.
The program provides individualized instruction in all subject areas with the goal for each student to transition to the general education program. Instruction is not limited to academics, but includes direct teaching of self-management, organization skills, social skills, and other skills necessary to be a successful student.
Aim High teachers work closely with teachers in the regular program to insure that AIM HIGH students will be successful in their mainstreamed classes. AIM HIGH conducts mainstreaming of its students so well that Mt. Helix Academy received a commendation for its program by the California Department of Education’s Nonpublic School review team.
AIM HIGH NPS
Referrals for AIM HIGH NPS should be made by forwarding the student’s IEP and other relevant documents to info@mthelixacademy.org
AIM HIGH is a certified Nonpublic, Non-Sectarian School (NPS)
The AIM HIGH program of Mt. Helix Academy is fully certified by the California State Department of Education to serve students with special needs on contract with local school districts. The 210-day AIM HIGH program is appropriate for elementary and Jr. High students who have learning disabilities and/or social interaction difficulties, possibly associated with ADD/ADHD, Asperger Syndrome, or another underlying problem in the mild/moderate range.
AIM HIGH is not for students with significant behavior problems
Students with severe behavior problems are not able to be served in the AIM HIGH program. Please consider another of TIEE’s schools for students who require a Behavior Intervention Plan or Behavior Support Plan for behavior that is aggressive or results in significant property destruction.
Special services through consultation only
Designated Instructional Services (DIS), including speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, and behavior intervention planning and implementation, are delivered on a consulting basis only. Consequently, students who have significant speech/language, sensory-motor, or behavior intervention needs and, therefore, require therapy to be delivered by the relevant professional, cannot be served by the AIM HIGH program. Students with significant DIS needs and/or significant behavior challenges should be referred to another of TIEE’s family of schools.
Student pick-up by a person other than a parent
Please understand that the school cannot release its students to someone who is not given authority by the parent to have them or to transport them. In the event that parents cannot pick up their child from school, parents must contact the school before the time of pick-up and inform the school who will be picking up the child. That person must be at least 18 years old and must be prepared to show photo identification if s/he is not known to school personnel.
Child custody arrangements
The school will not release a student to a spouse, former spouse, or other person who the court has ordered not to have custody of the child unless the court specifically rules otherwise. The school will respond only to written court documents in such cases.
