A Strong Foundation for Lifelong Learning
At Mt. Helix Academy, students are challenged to think deeply, communicate clearly, and approach learning with curiosity and purpose. Our academic program combines explicit instruction of skills with additional emphasis on critical thinking so children develop both foundational skills and the ability to apply them thoughtfully across subjects.
From primary grades through junior high, lessons are carefully designed to build knowledge step by step through guided instruction, practice, and independent application. Students are grouped by skill level in core subjects, allowing teachers to provide instruction that is both appropriately challenging and responsive to individual learning needs.
By combining high expectations with personalized support, Mt. Helix Academy prepares students for success in high school and beyond while helping them develop independence, resilience, and a genuine love of learning.

Building Fluent, Thoughtful Readers
In grades K–5, students develop strong reading foundations through research-based phonics and fluency instruction that strengthens decoding, comprehension, and vocabulary development.
As students grow, reading becomes a tool for deeper learning across all subject areas. Through literature studies, discussion, written analysis, and guided comprehension practice, students learn to interpret texts thoughtfully, support ideas with evidence, and engage with increasingly complex material.
Novel studies in elementary and junior high encourage students to explore character, theme, structure, and author’s purpose while developing analytical thinking and written expression.
Developing Skilled Communicators
Writing is integrated throughout the curriculum so students regularly practice organizing ideas, supporting arguments, conducting research, and communicating clearly for different audiences.
Through structured instruction and consistent practice, students develop proficiency across multiple forms of writing, including:
Spelling and grammar instruction reinforce written fluency while helping students develop precision and clarity in their work.
Over time, students learn not only how to write effectively, but how to express ideas thoughtfully and with purpose.

Problem Solving With Understanding
Mathematics instruction at Mt. Helix Academy emphasizes both computational fluency and conceptual understanding.
In primary and elementary grades, students build strong foundations through structured, research-based instruction that develops accuracy, reasoning, and real-world application. Concepts are introduced gradually and reinforced consistently so students understand not only how to solve problems, but why mathematical processes work.
In junior high, students progress through advanced coursework including Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. Ongoing review and cumulative practice help strengthen retention and prepare students for higher-level mathematics in high school.
Curiosity, Discovery, and Innovation
Science instruction encourages students to investigate the world through observation, experimentation, and analytical thinking.
Using STEMScopes and NGSS-aligned instruction, students explore Life, Earth, Physical, and Environmental Sciences while learning how to:
Junior high students participate in laboratory investigations and independent science fair projects, with many earning recognition at the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair.
Technology is integrated across grade levels and subject areas, helping students develop practical digital skills while enhancing creativity, research, collaboration, and presentation abilities.

Digital Citizenship & Responsible Technology Use
At Mt. Helix Academy, students are also taught how to use technology responsibly, respectfully, and thoughtfully. As digital tools become an increasingly important part of everyday life, students learn age-appropriate skills related to online safety, digital communication, research practices, and responsible technology use.
Through guided instruction and classroom expectations, students develop an understanding of digital citizenship, including how to interact respectfully online, evaluate information critically, protect personal privacy, and use technology as a positive tool for learning and collaboration.
Our goal is to help students become not only skilled technology users, but thoughtful and responsible digital citizens.

Preparing Students for a Digital Future
Technology education begins early at Mt. Helix Academy and becomes increasingly advanced each year.
Primary students develop foundational computer and coding skills, while elementary students explore robotics, programming, and structured coding platforms that strengthen logic and problem-solving.
In junior high, students work with advanced robotics systems and may pursue robotics programming as an elective course. Along the way, students learn sequencing, debugging, collaboration, and creative application of technology in hands-on, engaging ways.
Understanding the World Through Inquiry
Social studies instruction helps students examine the people, events, and ideas that continue to shape our world today.
Through research projects, discussion, writing assignments, and integrated technology, students learn to evaluate information, analyze historical perspectives, and make connections between past and present events.
Experiential learning opportunities, including field trips and living history experiences, help students engage more deeply with historical study and cultural understanding.

Spanish Language Instruction
Spanish instruction begins in Kindergarten and continues daily through junior high, helping students develop vocabulary, conversation skills, reading comprehension, and written communication.
As students progress through the program, they begin working with high school-level Spanish curriculum, allowing them to master foundational concepts at a developmentally appropriate pace while building confidence and proficiency over time. This advanced preparation positions students to enter high school with a strong academic foundation in Spanish and places them on a pathway toward earning the California State Seal of Biliteracy, which recognizes proficiency in two or more languages upon graduation.
Through engaging, age-appropriate instruction, students develop communication skills, cultural understanding, and an appreciation for the value of multilingualism in an increasingly interconnected world.
Cultural Awareness & Global Citizenship
At Mt. Helix Academy, we believe students become thoughtful citizens and compassionate leaders when they are encouraged to explore perspectives, experiences, and cultures beyond their own. Through literature, history, discussion, service-learning opportunities, and schoolwide programs, students develop empathy, respect, and an appreciation for the diversity of our global community.
Throughout the year, students participate in meaningful learning experiences connected to Black History Month, Holocaust remembrance, The Butterfly Project, Women’s History Month, and other cultural and historical observances. These studies encourage students to examine themes of resilience, leadership, justice, human dignity, and social responsibility.
Each spring, students participate in an in-depth multicultural study that integrates research, art, music, writing, and presentation skills. As part of this experience, students explore and share their own cultural heritage, family traditions, and personal backgrounds while learning about cultures from around the world.

The experience culminates in Multicultural Night, where families gather to celebrate student learning, cultural appreciation, and the unique stories and traditions that make our community stronger.
By fostering cultural awareness and global understanding, we prepare students to become thoughtful citizens, compassionate leaders, and engaged members of an increasingly interconnected world.

Prepared for What Comes Next
Mt. Helix Academy’s academic program combines structure, inquiry, and enrichment to help students grow into thoughtful learners and engaged citizens.
By developing strong academic foundations alongside independence, creativity, and critical thinking, students leave MHA prepared not only for future academic success, but for meaningful participation in the world around them.
