Helping Children Grow Beyond the Classroom

At Mt. Helix Academy, we believe education should nurture the whole child. Beyond strong academics, students are encouraged to discover their interests, express creativity, build confidence, stay active, and develop meaningful connections with others.

Through the arts, athletics, leadership opportunities, field experiences, and extracurricular programs, students grow into confident, well-rounded individuals who feel engaged both inside and outside the classroom.

Visual Arts

At Mt. Helix Academy, every child has the opportunity to explore creativity and develop artistic confidence through hands-on instruction and meaningful projects.

Under the guidance of award-winning Visual Arts teacher Ms. Stephanie Bedwell, students learn foundational techniques, the language of art, and principles of design through step-by-step instruction that supports artists at every skill level.

More importantly, students learn how to express themselves creatively, think critically, and take pride in their work.  Families love seeing the confidence students gain as they create artwork they are proud to share.

Student artwork has been featured at Children’s Hospital of San Diego and recognized through statewide art showcases, reflecting the creativity and dedication of our young artists.

Music & Performing Arts

Music and performance give students the opportunity to build confidence, collaborate with peers, and experience the joy of creative expression.

All K–5 students participate in weekly music classes where they develop singing ability, music theory knowledge, and foundational instrument skills through recorder, percussion, and ensemble learning.

Our musical theater program gives students the chance to step onto the stage and be part of something larger than themselves. Each year, students participate in professional-level productions at the Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Performing Arts Center.

These experiences help children develop poise, teamwork, responsibility, and confidence while creating memories they carry long after the performance ends.

Educational Field Experiences

Some of the most meaningful learning happens when students step outside the classroom and experience lessons firsthand.

Mt. Helix Academy students participate in field experiences that bring Science, Social Studies, literature, and history to life while encouraging curiosity, independence, and teamwork.

Primary & Elementary Students (TK–5th)

Younger students visit destinations such as Birch Aquarium, the San Diego Zoo, museums, theaters, and local historical sites. Students explore California history through experiences at the Barona Cultural Museum, Old Town San Diego, and Mission San Juan Capistrano.
Hands-on learning opportunities aboard the Star of India or at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center help students make meaningful connections between classroom learning and real-world experiences.
Fifth grade students also participate in a memorable multi-day trip to Boston, where they explore American history through immersive experiences and guided tours.

Junior High Students (6th–8th)

Junior High students continue building independence and leadership through immersive educational trips and shared experiences with classmates.

Experiences may include the outdoor education at Pali Mountain, the Museum of Tolerance, Washington D.C. tours, and end-of-year celebrations at an amusement park like Knott’s Berry Farm or Sea World.

These opportunities help students strengthen friendships, build confidence, and create lasting memories while expanding their understanding of the world around them.

Physical Education

At Mt. Helix Academy, physical education is about more than exercise — it is about helping students develop healthy habits, confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong appreciation for movement and activity.

Students participate in daily Physical Education through the research-based SPARK curriculum, which helps children build motor skills, coordination, fitness, and movement knowledge in a fun and supportive environment.

Children are encouraged to challenge themselves, practice good sportsmanship, and experience success at every level.

Older students also participate in leadership opportunities through peer-led tournaments, team sports, and the Presidential Fitness Program, helping them build communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.

Clubs & Extracurricular Activities

Mt. Helix Academy encourages students to explore interests that spark curiosity, creativity, and personal growth beyond the school day.

Students can participate in a variety of extracurricular clubs and specialty programs offered throughout the year in rotating sessions designed to engage different interests and age groups.

Programs may include:

Lego Engineering – Hands-on exploration of engineering, architecture, and problem-solving
Chess Club – Multi-level instruction that builds strategy, focus, and critical thinking
Biology
Painting Club – Opportunities for artistic exploration and creative expression
STEM Activities – Collaborative projects that encourage innovation and discovery
Intramural Sports – Fun, active opportunities that build teamwork and school spirit

These programs allow students to discover new interests, strengthen friendships, and develop confidence in a supportive environment.

Leadership Opportunities

Mt. Helix Academy believes students grow when they are given opportunities to lead, collaborate, and contribute to their community.

Junior High students can participate in ASB student government, helping organize school activities, dances, and special events throughout the year. These experiences encourage responsibility, communication, teamwork, and leadership development in a safe and supportive environment.

Leadership opportunities are also woven throughout the school experience through classroom responsibilities, peer collaboration, performances, athletics, and community involvement.

Annually, Mt. Helix Academy presents the Barbara Moulaison Leadership Award to an 8th grade graduate who demonstrates exceptional leadership and embodies our highest student goals. The award was established in 2010 to honor the lasting impact of our former school director.

Enrichment That Lasts Beyond the School Years

At Mt. Helix Academy, enrichment is not separate from education — it is an essential part of helping children grow into confident, curious, and compassionate individuals.

We believe some of the most meaningful learning happens when students are given opportunities to create, explore, perform, lead, and connect with others. Through these experiences, children discover their strengths, build lasting friendships, and develop the confidence to thrive both in school and beyond.
